Orthopedic Surgery and Limb Reconstruction

The department of Orthopedic surgery in Specialist Hospital Is one of the leading Orthopedic Departments in Kerala with references from all over Kerala. The department is manned by Dr. V V George , Dr. Cherian Kovoor, Dr. Vinod Padmanabhan and Dr. Sabin Viswanath. We cover almost all aspects of Orthopedic Surgery namely Trauma, Bone and soft tissue reconstruction, Non unions , Orthopedic oncology, Deformity Correction of upper and lower limbs, Arthroscopy and sports medicine, and Pediatric Orthopaedics.

Trauma
A leading center of complicated trauma referral this department handles references from all over Kerala. We specialize minimally invasive fixation of fractures of humerus , femur and tibia by closed nailing techniques which includes Interlocking nailing and Ender nailing Also routine open reduction and internal fixation of fractures is routinely done. Closed percutaneous fixation of supracondylar fractures in children , percutaneous fixation of tibial condyle fractures.
Bone and soft tissue reconstruction
Increasing incidence , velocity and violence of accidents and injuries present with complicated with major bone and soft tissue loss. Over the years the department has specialized in bony and soft tissue reconstruction for bone loss due to trauma and infection .

Specialized techniques include ILIZAROV reconstruction system , and vascularised fibula transfer which involves as dedicated team approach by orthopaedic and microvascualr surgeons.

The fibula from the opposite leg is taken along with its blood vessels and fixed to bony defect in the recipient site. This is complex surgery which involves team effort by orthopedic and microvascular surgeons .
Non unions
The department is a major referral center for treatment of non unions with and without infections ,with and without bone loss. Various modes of treatment include internal fixation with plates and nails, bone grafting, ILIZAROV monofocal and bifocal osteosynthesis and vascularised fibular graft .
Orthopaedic oncology
In close association with microvascular surgery we are doing limb salvage for malignant and benign tumors of the upper and lower limbs.
Deformity correction
With more than 10 yrs experience in various modes of limb deformity correction and lengthening matched only a by few institutions in South India we handle deformities caused by varied causes such as trauma , infections , congenital and developmental disorders and both bony and soft tissue. Various methods used include internal and external fixation devises with an excellent result on long term follow up .
 
Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine
Arthroscopy and Sports medicine is an active department which doses both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The hospital has the latest endoscopic equipment and viewing system.Procedures include Arthroscopic shaving, menisectomy and Anterior cruciate ligament repair .

Paediatric Orthopedics
Paediatric trauma, limb lengthening and deformity corrections- Both acquired and congenital are dealt with regularly here. In Co-operation with microvascular department difficult paediatric orthopaedic Cases are dealt with on a regular basis .
