One of the vital features of a woman’s body is breast. It gives beautiful look and confidence to the individual. Smaller breasts seems unattractive . For this reason, there are many who choose breast implantation. Breast augmentation is the surgical procedure to increase the fullness and projection of the breast by placing breast implants. The procedure is termed as augmentation mammaplasty.
The procedure is mainly used to:
- Restore breast volume that has been lost due to different reasons such as pregnancy, breast feeding etc.
- Improve self-image and self-confidence
- Increase the size of a genetically smaller breast.
A good candidate for breast augmentation procedure is one who is dissatisfied with the size of her breast. The candidate should be healthy enough to meet a surgery. Many individuals have a misconception that, drooping breasts can be corrected through breast augmentation. But, the fact is that breast augmentation procedure does not correct saggy breasts. It can only enhance the breasts to look fuller.
The first step of the procedure is giving anesthesia to the candidate. It might be an intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The doctor will choose the right one for you. After putting you in sleep, the surgeon will make incisions in inconspicuous areas. Incisions are of different types, including:
- Inframammary incision
- Transaxillary incision
- Periareolar incision etc.
The surgeon will choose the right type of incision for you based on different factors such as, type of implant used, the degree of enlargement desire and your anatomy. The surgeon will place the implant through these incisions. Mainly, there are two types of implants:
- Silicone breast implants
- Saline breast implants
Silicone implants are filled with elastic gel whereas saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. Silicone implants are considered to be better than the other one as there is a less chance to collapse. There may be various other types of implants available as the implant manufactures manufacture and introduce new styles and types occasionally. Saline or silicone implants are suggested mostly at younger age for reconstruction purposes. The implant will be inserted into the pocket either under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. The implant insertion method depends upon various factors such as:
- The type of implant used
- Degree of enlargement desired
- The candidate’s body type and
- The surgeon’s suggestions etc.
The surgeon will close the incision with layered sutures in the breast tissue. The results will be visible immediately after the surgery. There can be swelling and bruising which will fade within a period of time. Post-operative recovery may take 4 – 6 hours of time. You will be suggested to reduce strenuous physical activities for a few days. The surgeon will give you specific instructions regarding follow-up care for fast recovery.
