Genioplasty is a cosmetic surgery for correction of retreaded or protruded chin to improve the appearance. This can take the form of chin height reduction or chin rounding by osteotomy or augmentation using implants.
Chin surgery may be suggested as a part of nose surgery in order to get a balance to the facial features. It will repair the whole appearance. A candidate with good health can go for chin surgery/genioplasty. The candidate should not have realistic expectations regarding the results after the surgery. .
The surgery can be done in two ways- either by placing the implants or by repositioning the bone that support the chin. Implants are of many types including silicone and other materials. Your desire, level of chin deformity and surgeon’s suggestions will decide on the type of implant to be used. During the procedure, an incision will be made inside the lower lip or under the chin. If you are having chin implants, the surgeon will place the implant through the incision. If you are to have bone repositioning, the surgeon will reposition the chin bone through the incision. The whole procedure will be done under a general or local anesthesia. .
You will experience a minimal post-operative pain. Some discolouration and swelling are also possible for 1 – 2 weeks after the surgery. Numbness will be there around the operative areas for sometime. Dressings and bandages will be removed within 5-7 days and the sutures will be absorbed within a certain amount of time. Some may require removal.
