Blepharoplasty (Eye bags)

It is a surgery for the removal of bags under the eyes to give a more youthful appearance. Blepharoplsty is also known as eyelid surgery or cosmetic eye lid surgery in different regions. The procedure can give you a rejuvenated appearance by clearing the unwanted bulging and protruding of areas around the eyes.

Blepharoplasty or eye lid surgery has a long trace of history. It is believed that it had started around 4000 years ago. There had been continuous research and innovations in the field. Eyelids surgery includes removing the excess skin, muscles and fat from the eyelids. There are upper and lower eyelid surgeries. Upper eye lid surgery is to remove the fat from the upper part of the eyelid and lower eyelid surgery is to remove the fat from the lower part. Blepharoplasty can remove:

  • Heavy looking eyelids
  • Block vision
  • Puffiness and
  • Aged appearance

There is another form of eyelid surgery called double eyelid surgery. It is called as Asian Eyelid Surgery. It is performed to create an upper eyelid crease. It is also called Westernisation of the eyelid. Lower blepharoplasty can remove excess skin and reduce wrinkles. It also improves the shape of the eyelid. Healthy individuals with realistic expectations about the surgery can be a good candidate for blepharoplasty surgery. It is important to discuss with the surgeon before the surgery. It is to know about the potential risks and complications. The surgeon will be able to give him/her pre and post-operative instructions. The surgery will be done under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.

The incisions will be made like a design around the area where there is fat to be removed. The excess skin and fat will be removed through these incisions. After the removal, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures. You may experience swelling and bruising after the surgery. There can be other risks and complicatons such as infection, bleeding, scarring dry eye, abnormal eyelid position, vision problems etc. with the surgery. You will be able to return to normal activities after 7 to 10 days following the surgery. Swelling and bruising may take 2 weeks to resolve.
