Breast reduction

The procedure involves reduction the size of the breasts, lifts the sagging breasts and reduce the size of the areola. Disproportionally large breast may cause you neck pain, back pain and other cosmetic concerns. Breast reduction is an effective solution for all these issues.

Breast reduction is also known as reduction mammaplasty. The surgery involves removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin. This will help an individual to achieve a desired, beautiful breast. The procedure is highly individualized and it should not be chosen to fulfil someone else’s desire. A good candidate for breast reductions surgery is one who is:

  • Physically healthy
  • Having realistic expectations about the surgery and results
  • Non-smoker
  • Wanting to get smaller breasts
  • Whose breast size limit her physical activity
  • Have hanging and stretched breasts
  • Have enlarged areolas caused by stretched skin etc.

The surgery is performed usually under general anesthesia. During the process, the surgeon removes some of the breast tissue and skin. The nipples will be moved higher to reposition them. For the entire procedure to be done, the surgeon will make three surgical cuts:

  • From areola down to the crease under the breast
  • Around the areola and
  • Across the lower crease of the breast

Extra fat, skin and breast tissue etc. will be removed through these incisions. The nipple and areola will be moved to higher position and the areola will be made smaller. After these procedures get completed, the surgeon will close the cuts with stitches to reshape the breast. In certain cases, the surgeon will also conduct liposuction along with the breast reduction procedure. This is done to improve the breast’s shape and areola areas. Breast reduction surgery is considered to be safe. Bleeding and infection can be considered to be some of the minor risks of the surgery.

There can be certain risks of the anesthesia. Other risks may include:

  • Difficulty breastfeeding
  • Loss of feeling in the nipple area
  • Uneven position of the nipples or differences in the size of the breasts etc.

Swelling and bruising around the incisions will fade within a few weeks of time. Stitches will be removed within 2 weeks after the surgery. Pain will also decrease during these period of time. The surgeon may prescribe for medications to control the discomforts after the surgery.
