Hair transplantation is a surgical technique for the treatment of male pattern baldness. The first hair transplant surgery in Kerala was performed in 1975 by Dr. K.R. Rajappan who is one of the first generation of plastic surgeons in Kerala. We have evolved from old punch grafts to the most advanced FUE technique over 45 years of experience.

We are the first institution in Kerala to start the hair transplant units using the most modern equipments.Folliscope is an advanced digital device with software for diagnosing hair and scalp problems. The procedure helps to examine the density, thickness, growth, scalp, hair losing type etc. Ours is the first center to use Video microscope (Folliscreen) in Kerala to prepare the follicular units. We use Choi implanter (Follipen) to implant the hairs .This device protects the hair while implanting and prevents damage to the precious hair. Implanting is made easier, faster and safer with this device. The most recent addition to the hair transplant unit is Motorized Follicular Unit Extractor for harvesting hair follicles.

Hair Transplantation

Overview

A surgical procedure in which the hair is moved from the back and/or sides of the scalp and replanted to the bald areas is called hair transplantation. The area from where the hair moved is called ‘the donor area’ and where the hair is replanted is called the ‘recipient area’. The transplanted hair will continue to grow for a person’s lifetime. In earlier times, a technique called punch graft was used for hair transplantation. The field has now grown up and lot of new techniques have been developed. One of the latest techniques among them is Follicular Unit Extraction. All these modern techniques are mainly based on the concept “Follicular Transplantation” proposed by Dr. Bernstein in the year 1995. until then, push grafts and other traditional methods were used for hair transplantation.

The right candidate for hair transplantation

A candidate for hair transplant procedure should meet certain criteria. It may include:

Hair transplant is not a method to prevent hair loss. It cannot prevent the progression of generic hair loss. It can only be used as treatment to change your appearance that has been changed due to crucial hair loss.

From old Punch Grafts to the new Motorized FUE

As per the records, the very first hair transplant was not punch grafts, it is called ‘micro grafts through which only 1-3 hairs were transplanted. During those times, only females were meant to have hair transplant procedure. Standard punch grafts methods were used during 1980s. The procedure includes removing the hair from the scalp using a cylinder. One graft may contain 20-30 hairs each. The procedure had certain drawbacks and was necessary to find new techniques. As a result of continuous research, new techniques were further developed.

FUE and Motorized FUE are the latest techniques we use at our centre for hair transplantation.

FUE: In this procedure, the grafts are removed one-by-one from the back and sides of the scalp. A small, round cutting instrument guided by hand or robotic control will be used for removing the grafts. The grafts are placed into tiny recipient sites.

Motorized FUE: It can be called safe as the procedure makes less damage to the follicles. For the procedure, a motorized instrument will be used for the procedure. This instrument can significantly increase the speed of the procedure.
