a. Replantation
i. Fingers
Replantation is the process of reattaching the finger, hand, or arm through surgical method. The main aim of the surgery is to restore the normal functioning as much as possible to the injured body part. If the body part is too damaged, replantation may not be possible.
The replantation procedure is done through different steps. The first step is to remove the damaged tissue carefully. After that, the bone ends will be trimmed and rejoined. Muscles, veins, tendons and nerves are stitched together. A free tissue transfer may be used to cover the uncovered nerves, joints and tendons. For which, a piece of tissue will be extracted from any other parts of the body.
Recovery time and results may vary accordingly. The regrowth of two types of nerves such as sensory and motor nerves play a vital role in determining the recovery of the use of the reattached finger. Follow up care may include physical therapy and rehabilitation. Temporary bracing and physical therapy is essential for the recovery process. As smoking causes poor circulation and loss of blood flow to the replanted finger, it is strictly prohibited during the recovery period. The patient’s emotional well being is also an essential factor for recovery. The replanted part will be able to regain a result of 60-80% after the procedure.
i(a): Transfer of a toe to a hand when there is a loss of fingers is also possible.
ii. Hand
Incidents such as accidents and traumas are the main factor that makes it necessary to have hand replantation. The hand is one of the important parts of the human body. So, it is important to take good care of the hand whenever necessary. When you get your fractured, or severed human part, you should first wrap the hand in gauze and part or parts should be sealed in a plastic bag and placed on ice. It should be kept carefully and should not be allowed to freeze. The surgery should be done within 24 hours if the part is kept cold, if not surgery should be carried out within 9 hours depending on the injured part. Smaller digits may be done in longer time but thicker parts should be done within shorter time.

Delay in the treatment can permanently damage your hand’s functions. So, any fracture or injury should be reported to the doctor immediately.
