Male breast correction (Gynaecomastia)

Excessively large breast is a rare condition in men, which is called gynecomastia. The only option to resize the breast is surgery. Male breast reduction has become one of the common cosmetic procedures nowadays.

Over-developed breasts can affect men of any age. It can be caused due to various reasons like hormonal changes, use of certain drugs, some health conditions or heredity conditions.

Excessive breast can create many mental and physical issues in men. It may affect their self-confidence. The problem gynecomastia is characterized by different factors such as:

  • Excess glandular tissue development
  • Excess localized fat
  • It may affect only one breast (unilateral) or both breasts (bilateral)
  • A combination of both excess fat and glandular tissue

A physically healthy men can undergo for gynecomastia surgery. The candidate should have realistic expectations. The surgery should not be done if the candidate’s breast development is not stabilized.

The candidate should be a non-smoker and one whose condition cannot be treated through an alternative medication. Individuals who have life-threatening medical conditions are not considered to be a good candidate for breast correction surgery.

The procedure to correct gynecomastia is technically termed as reduction mammaplasty. It can reduce the size of the breast, flattening and enhance the chest contours. As most of the other procedures, male breast correction surgery also starts with a general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. If the large breast is a result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction alone will be enough. The excess fat will be sucked out using a small tube called cannula. There are various liposuction techniques. The surgeon will help you to choose the best option for you.

Other than liposuction, excision techniques are also recommended for glandular breast tissue or excess skin. If the areola to be reduced or nipple to be reshaped, excision becomes necessary. In some cases, both liposuction and excision are done to correct gynecomastia. Post-operative care will be suggested by the surgeon after the surgery, according to the condition and procedure chosen.
